About The Golf Guy

Hi everyone! My name is Vivek, a.k.a The Golf Guy! I am a 12 handicap golfer currently based out of Connecticut (could be changing in a few months) and an absolute golf addict! I have been playing golf for the last 15 years (~60% of my life on earth) and am super excited to share my golf journey, tips and tricks about the game, and unbiased opinion about the latest golf products with you all.

My goals for this blog are three fold:

  1. Document my golfing journey - I started playing golf at the relatively young age of 10 and have been fortunate to experience some pretty incredible things over my golfing career (going to US Opens, playing in a Pro Am, and even playing Pebble Beach to name a few). In an effort to start documenting some of my memories and create a record of moments to come I created the @TheGolfGuy IG account in 2016. Since then I have seen the community of people interested in my journey grow to north of 5500 on IG so I figured the natural evolution would be to start a blog and expand upon what I have already built on IG.

  2. Honest Golf Advice/Tips for the Average Golfer - Growing up in a family where I was the only golfer I didn’t have a ton of places or people to turn to for honest advice and insight on golf related topics. I hope to share the tips and tricks I have learned over the last 15 years with all of you so you don’t make the same mistakes I have.

  3. Product Reviews - I love new golf gadgets, devices, clothes, and training aids – so as I test these things, you’ll get completely unbiased reviews from me.

Playing History/Highlights

  • The Start May 2006 - My introduction to the game of golf was accidental. My father had played golf on and off in the late 90s but never got into it. He did however keep his clubs and as we moved house to house his clubs came with us. One day when I was about 10 I got bored and stumbled upon his clubs in the basement and decided to play around with them in the yard. As I was outside my Dad noticed I had a fairly natural swing and took me to the range that weekend. A few days later he got me my first set of clubs for my birthday and that was the start of a pretty fun journey!

  • First Round of 18 Holes - I actually don’t know the exact date of this but my father had a work trip up in the Poconos which had a pretty nice golf attached to the hotel we were staying at. This was my first round of 18 holes in my career, and although I probably shot a million, it was the start of my golf addiction.

  • Travelers Championship Pro Am 2010- The Travelers Championship is the one annual PGA tournament that takes place in CT and in 2010 I had the chance to play in my first pro-am. Highlight from the day was birdieing one of the Par 3s singlehanded!

  • Lake of Isles Junior Golf Scholarship 2011 - In middle school I was fortunate to be given the Lake of Isles Junior Golf Scholarship that provided about a dozen junior golfers free lessons at the Hank Haney Golf Academy. I was lucky enough to be selected from a competitive selection process and have parents that drove me 3 hours round trip to let me play and get coaching (thanks Mom and Dad).

  • High School Golf 2010-2014 - High school golf was definitely the peak of my competitive golf career. Over the course of playing four years on our varsity team I went from consistently shooting bogey golf to about an 8 handicap (my personal best). Two major highlights are 1) helping lead our team my senior year to finish top 4 in the state and 2) winning the Coaches Cup (a 2 man best ball tournament). The fun hindsight story about winning the Coaches Cup is the two kids we beat ended up being D2 national champions in college and one is currently on the Korn Ferry Tour! Will likely be the best player I ever beat :).

  • UConn College Club Golf - During college I had the chance to play on our club golf team for a season. Was a fun way to continue playing golf while in school and keep the competitive juices flowing! This was also where the inspiration for The Golf Guy started.

  • Today - I decided after a year of club golf I enjoyed the experiences, the friendships, and the fun of the game more than competition. As a result today my goals for the game today are to continue improving for myself and using the game of golf to combine my passion for travel, photography, and golf.
