Discovering Panmure Golf Club: A Hidden Gem in Carnoustie, Scotland
Most people visit Carnoustie Scotland to play the Championship Course at Carnoustie. I myself was originally one of those people. But after some additional diligence when planning my itinerary, I came across Panmure GC. Just 2 miles away from Carnoustie, the experience at Panmure is second to none and has a history that rivals the best in the world.
A James Braid design, Panmure Golf Club boasts an 18-hole links course that has been meticulously maintained and revered since its establishment in 1845. This classic course combines traditional design with natural beauty, featuring undulating fairways, strategically placed bunkers, and fast greens.
The Panmure links have been acknowledged several times over the years with many significant competitions being staged at the course including national amateur tournaments as well as final qualifying for the Open Championship. In 2019 they hosted the regional qualifying for the Open Championship and the R&A Girls amateur Championship.
Ben Hogans History at Panmure
One of my favorite stories from the day was the history the great Ben Hogan had at Panmure. In 1953 Ben Hogan won his one and only Open Championship at Carnoustie Golf Links. This would be his final major victory and the only time he would ever visit Scotland. The man known as the ‘Wee Ice Mon’ by the Scots cemented his legendary reputation thanks to the help of Panmure Golf Club.
The great Hogan spent two weeks at Panmure, accompanied only by his caddy, Cecil Timms to acclimatize to the terrain of links golf and to acquaint himself with the smaller 1.62 inch British ball. Hogan would never play in the Open again, but his legacy at Panmure remains! The sixth hole, a 414-yard par 4, stroke index 1, is named after the great man. Hogan suggested the addition of the cleverly placed hidden pot bunker to the front right of the green. Over sixty-eight years on, the members still refer to it as "Hogan's Bunker". Thankfully, I just got to experience the bunker with my eyes rather than with my clubs.
The Course and Practice Facilities
Before you take on the course, take advantage of the club’s top-notch practice facilities. The driving range is equipped with quality balls and targets to help you hone your long game (P.S. Carnoustie Doesn’t Have a Range), while the short game area and putting greens are perfect for refining those crucial scoring shots. Whether you're a seasoned player or a beginner, you'll find everything you need to prepare for an excellent round.
Unmatched Hospitality
One of the standout features of Panmure Golf Club is its exceptional customer service. From the moment you arrive, you'll be greeted with genuine Scottish hospitality. The staff at Panmure will do everything it takes to make your visit special. They are always on hand to offer tips, share stories, and ensure you have everything you need for an unforgettable day on the links.
The Clubhouse: A Blend of Tradition and Comfort
The clubhouse at Panmure is a charming blend of historical elegance and modern comfort. After your round, relax in the cozy lounge, where you can enjoy a selection of local delicacies and beverages. The clubhouse offers a picturesque view of the course, allowing you to soak in the beautiful surroundings while reminiscing about your game.
Extra Perks: Making Your Visit Even More Special
Panmure Golf Club goes above and beyond to make your visit memorable with a host of additional perks:
Complementary Metal Bag Tag: As a keepsake of your visit, you'll receive a stylish metal bag tag featuring the Panmure logo. This not only serves as a great memento but also as a practical addition to your golf gear.

Printed Photo Commemorating Your Visit: Capture the memory of your visit with a printed photo, perfect for framing or sharing with friends and family.
